2006 buick lucerne review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New flagship delivers elegance, ride, handling. introductionbuick is overhauling its lineup and the lucerne is the second new car, following last year's introduction of the lacrosse. In keeping with tradition, the 2006 buick lucerne is positioned as an affordable entry-level full-size luxury car. The lucerne replaces the lesabre and the park avenue, which are no longer being made. buick says the v6 models compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 330, and likes to compare the v8 models with the infiniti m and lexus gs, which cost much more than the top of the line lucerne cxs. In any case, we found the new lucerne to be a plush, highly competent full-size sedan at a compelling price. buick's new flagship sedan boasts clean lines suggestive of fine german sedans, while maintaining buick traditions. Inside, it's elegant and comfortable and easy. Underway, the lucerne is smooth and quiet, but its steering is precise and it handles winding roads with aplomb. These are benefits of a new chassis and structure the lucerne shares with the all-new 2006 cadillac dts. The dts and lucerne represent gm's new, full-size, front-wheel-drive luxury sedans. the most enjoyable of the new buicks is the lucerne cxs with its magnetic ride control, a sports suspension developed for the corvette and cadillac xlr that further improves handling. Yet we might opt for the lucerne cxl v6, a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. lineupthe 2006 buick lucerne is offered in three trim levels. All come standard with a comprehensive list of safety features including six airbags that include a dual-stage driver's bag and a dual depth front passenger bag. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor are standard on all models. Six-passenger seating is available by ordering the front bench seat 250). The optional comfort and convenience package 450) includes features an electrochromic rearview mirror, universal home remote, illuminated visors with vanity mirrors, intermittent front wipers with rainsense, and body-colored outside power, heated, mirrors. Cxs also has upgraded leather seats with eight-way power seats with memory for driver and front passenger. The cxs also features a nine-speaker, 280-watt harman kardon audio system with xm satellite radio. options for the lucerne include heated/cooled front seats; factory-installed remote start; ultrasonic rear parking assist; rain-sensing windshield wiper system; the first heated windshield washer fluid application in its class; six-disc in-dash cd changer with mp3 capability; and a dvd-based navigation system. walkaroundthere is no mistaking the lucerne for anything other than a buick. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic buick waterfall grill blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps. chrome trim is kept to a minimum. The only stylistic link to buicks of old are the small portholes on each side of the front fenders. That means the lucerne benefits from the newest techniques for building a quiet luxury car. these include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. Laboratory test results show that the lucerne is quieter than a lexus es 330 and this was evident in a back-to-back driving comparison. much like the exterior, the lucerne's interior is cleanly designed with just enough touches of wood and chrome trim to make it luxurious without being too opulent. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel. the center stack with large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system is located high up for easy access. six airbags provide plenty of protection in a crash. Along with the cadillac dts, the lucerne gets the first ever application of a dual-depth passenger airbag. It has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect. for those who need seating for six, buick continues to offer a traditional front bench seat in all but the performance cxs model. Most people opt for front bucket seats, which provide a good level of comfort and have an armrest in the center console. rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. The lucerne handled with aplomb, exhibiting no wallowing or causing any untoward moments. A rigid chassis is the key to balance sharp handling with a smooth ride, and the new lucerne really delivers. the lucerne's ride is excellent, thanks to the long wheelbase and stiff body structure. In back-to-back driving along a stretch of less than perfect road, we found the lucerne's ride quality comparable to that of the benchmark 2006 toyota avalon. Buick loyalists who are used to a cushy ride will not complain about the lucerne. It might be stiffer than they are used to but it's still plenty smooth enough. And the steering is precise and responsive. the cxs features gm's magnetic ride control, a sports suspension designed to enhance overall ride performance. Magnetic ride control uses magnetically charged particles suspended in a synthetic fluid to continuously adjust the fluid's viscosity to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics. The system, which first appeared on the sporty cadillac xlr and then the corvette, delivers a quicker response than conventional valve-damping systems. We tried a cxs with the system and found it did handle better but not significantly. indeed, when we tried a cxl v6 we were pleasantly surprised at just how well it performed. With the lighter v6, the cxl seemed more agile on twisty roads and the front end felt a bit lighter. The v6 models also suffer less from torque steer, a slight tugging felt through the steering wheel when turning and accelerating at the same time. so which model? We were pleased with its performance. However, gm's excellent stabilitrak electronic stability control system is available with the v8 models, which improves driving control by reducing the chance of skidding. Stabilitrak is well worth having. summarythe all-new buick lucerne is an attractive near-luxury car offering looks, features, quality and value. It's quiet and pleasant-mannered as we'd expect of a buick, yet its steering is more precise than owners of previous buicks might expect, and it turns into corners crisply, with little body lean. Its v6 engines offer good power, growling under acceleration, but motoring along smoothly and quietly on the freeway, and the transmission works flawlessly. inside is a rich, high-quality cabin with attractive woodgrain trim, nicely presented instruments and controls, and available leather seats with nice-looking gathered stitching. electronic features make the well-equipped lacrosse a safe, all-weather family car with nice conveniences. For 2006, abs and side-curtain airbags have been made standard on all models. lineupthe buick lacrosse comes in three models. The cx and the more luxurious cxl come with a 3. 8-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 200 horsepower. The performance-oriented cxs comes with 3. 6-liter v6 with modern double overhead cams and variable valve timing that develops 240 horsepower. the cx 22,935) comes with cloth upholstery and manually operated air conditioning. Standard features for all models include tilt wheel, six-way power driver's seat, programmable power locks with remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, leather-wrapped shift knob, and a six-speaker am/fm/cd sound system. A tiny third side window behind the c-pillar adds some visual interest, while at the rear, a discernible dent in the decklid ties the taillamps together and recalls the more adventurous surface development that characterized buicks of the early 1960s. A single, slender chrome spear decorates the doors. Xm satellite radio shares a single antenna with the standard onstar system. cx models can be identified by a grained, graphite-color finish on the rocker panels underneath the doors, while this panel is body color on cxl and cxs. Otherwise, the base cx has almost no decoration at all, beyond the bolt-on faux alloy covers for its 16-inch steel wheels. construction quality looks good. Body, door, and fender gaps on the lacrosse are all noticeably smaller than on the previous regal and century models. And lacrosse's headlamps are said to be 35-percent brighter. to improve crash safety and reduce noise, buick used generous amounts of expensive, high-strength steel, a magnesium cross beam behind the instrument panel, another cross beam behind the rear seats, steel reinforcements in the rocker panels, an interlocking door latch system, high-strength steel door beams, a double-thick quiet steel floor pan and firewall, and structural foam in the front fenders. interiorthe buick lacrosse features a roomy, comfortable cabin with a general look of quality. The standard front bucket seats, clad in leather in the cxl and cxs, feature a new type of stitching, and newly developed silk-impregnated vinyl on the seat side panels emulates the look and feel of leather. rear-seat legroom is generous, thanks to a relatively long wheelbase of 110 inches. My 6-foot, 4-inch frame can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room to spare. interior quality and appearance are enhanced by reducing the number of individual trim pieces, which makes everything fit better and gives the cabin a richer, higher grade look. The instruments and controls are white on black, and each of the three round dials is wringed in chrome and set into a deeply tunneled instrument panel. It's all very nicely presented, and relatively sporty looking. the center stack is finished a mica-flecked flat black, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy to put through its menu. However, the information panel is so glossy that it's hard to read in early morning or late afternoon light. Quiet tuning uses specially engineered parts and adds sound insulation in the engine, on the firewall, under the toeboard, inside the wheel wells and in the roof. Buick's quiet tuning has made lacrosse one of the quietest cars in the class. optional features upgrade this car to a cut above, making for a truly complete, safe, all-weather family car. This is an older cast-iron v6, but it's been thoroughly upgraded internally to reduce mechanical noise and features electronic throttle control. It's rated at 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm, and 230 pound-feet of torque at 4000. the newer 3. 6-liter v6 that comes on the cxs revs more freely and produces more power despite its smaller size: 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm. Its torque curve is also flatter, peaking with 225 pound-feet at 2000 rpm, but delivering 90 percent of that peak between 1500 and 6000 rpm. Mash the gas pedal and she goes. It works flawlessly. as mentioned, the lacrosse handles quite well. It has terrific body roll control, meaning it's not bouncing and yawing around when pushed harder on rural roads. The suspension used in the cx and cxs is about 20 percent stiffer than in the old regal or century, with larger stabilizer bars, so the lacrosse handles better than those cars. we found the csx more sporty to drive on winding roads in northern michigan. We later pushed one of these cars hard on some tight, bumpy canyon roads outside los angeles and found it handles quite well. The grip from the tires is tenacious. Even when squealing around curves, we found it maintained good composure, not losing its poise the way older american sedans tend to do.
